Microsoft Copilot Harness: Multi-Model AI Agents Explained

03 Nov 2026

Microsoft Copilot harness

The AI model is only half of an AI agent.

Microsoft has introduced the Copilot harness, the layer around a model that handles instructions, context, tools, execution and controls. GitHub’s engineers built it, and Microsoft now uses it across Copilot Code, Copilot Studio, the GitHub Copilot app, the CLI and VS Code.

What stands out:

🔀 Multi-model – it works with 20+ frontier models, plus bring-your-own-key, and routes each task to the model best suited to it.

🔌 Open standards – it supports MCP, agent skills and agent plugins, so agents can connect to the tools you already use.

🛡️ Built-in governance – Microsoft runs the agent loop and sandbox. You supply the instructions, skills, tools and model choice.

☁️ Available in Microsoft Foundry as a managed service, or as an SDK on GitHub.

The practical point: agents are getting more capable and more connected, and that raises the stakes on access, data and cost. More models and more tools means more to govern.

At Imagetext we help Kiwi businesses get Microsoft 365 ready for this: permissions, data security, licensing and training, before the agents go live.
