Apple explains how to speed up Spotlight indexing
27 Aug 2026
The company has published a new support document to explain how Spotlight indexing works and what users can do to make the process finish sooner. Apple warns that, on devices with a lot of data, this task can take hours or even days.

• These are Apple’s recommendations for speeding up the process:
• Leave the device unused.
• Keep it plugged into power.
Connect it to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, especially if it needs to download emails or other data to incorporate into the index.
Indexing continuously creates and maintains a local catalog of the content stored on the device.
The index is generated and stored independently on each device. Therefore, if a user has multiple Apple devices, each one must complete its own indexing after an initial installation or a major system update.
Apple notes that subsequent incremental updates to the index are usually much faster than the initial process.
