We recently have had a number of clients get hit by various versions of the CryptoLocker Ransomware. Basically you will receive an email with an attached file, typically a .zip or .7z file. If you open the zip file, it runs a background process where it starts locking all the files you have access too. This includes files on servers, Dropbox, One Drive, NAS volumes etc if you are connected to them.
This is currently only effecting Windows users at this stage, however never assume the Macs not effected. A user may forward the email onto someone else.
So in short, if you receive an email with a ZIP file attached – unless you know 100% its legit and trust the sender, delete the email. Don’t forward it, just delete it and empty the trash.
If you realise to late and discover that files that they have had access to are no longer able to be opened – disconnect the device from the network IMMEDIATELY to minimise the the impact to the rest of the network. This means pulling out the ethernet lead or disconnect from the wireless network. Shut the PC down and contact us immediately (email@example.com).
Also remember the locked files are locked for good…. the only real option is to delete the effected files and restore from backup. So this is another reason to have good regular backups both on and offsite!!!
